Cryotherapy
Learn About Our Non-Surgical Procedure for Bump Removal at Fort Washington Veterinary Hospital!
Cryosurgery is an alternative to surgical removal of various types of abnormal lesions or growths.
At Fort Washington Veterinary Hospital, our cryosurgery unit uses nitrous oxide to freeze and destroy the lesion so that it eventually falls off and is replaced with healthy tissue. There is no need for general anesthesia or sutures; this procedure is much less expensive than surgical removal and takes only a few minutes to perform.

Advantages of Cryosurgery
Cryosurgery offers benefits for pets with its non-invasive, precise, and relatively painless approach. Utilizing extreme cold, it effectively treats various skin issues like tumors and warts. This minimally traumatic procedure promotes quicker recovery, reduces discomfort, and provides a viable alternative to traditional surgical methods, enhancing the overall well-being of pets. Before you take your pet in for cryosurgery, it’s important to know:
- Your vet must evaluate the bump(s) during an exam to make sure it is indeed a candidate for cryosurgery removal. If time permits, we might even be able to perform cryosurgery during this appointment.
- Some growths/lesions will require more than one treatment. If a follow-up treatment is required, there will be a reduced fee for that new procedure.
- Your pet may experience a slight stinging or burning sensation, but it is minimal, and no pain medications are required.
- Most common candidates for cryosurgery include:
- Eyelid tumors
- Lick granulomas
- Adnexal growths
- Skin tags
- Papillomas
- Adenomas
- Warts
- Cysts
- This service is only performed by a veterinarian.
