Microchipping

Reuniting Lost Pets with Their Owners

Microchipping in Fort Washington

At Fort Washington Veterinary Hospital, we know how stressful and heartbreaking it is when you cannot find your beloved pet. Unfortunately, there are plenty of sad stories of pets being stolen—even if they have collars with the owner’s contact information on the tag. Luckily, there’s a solution to decrease the odds of your pet being lost or stolen. At Fort Washington Veterinary Hospital, we highly recommend microchipping your pets to increase the chances that you will be reunited if they get out and wander off.

How Does Microchipping Work?

While tags, collars, and tattoos all serve the purpose of identifying pets, they, unfortunately, have their weak points. Tags can be damaged so that they’re illegible and they’re easy to remove. Collars are easy to tear or slip off an animal. Tattoos, though meant to be permanent, can fade over time or become difficult to spot as hair regrows over the area.

Unlike tags, collars, and tattoos, a microchip is a truly permanent solution to identifying lost pets. When you bring in your furry friend to be microchipped, a veterinarian will use a syringe to inject a tiny chip right between your pet’s shoulder blades. This process is relatively painless, and the chip is extremely safe. This chip contains a unique ID number that is registered to a national database. Whenever an animal hospital, shelter or animal control officer scans for a microchip with a special device, a pet’s unique number pops up, allowing access to the owners contact information.

Everyone at Fort Washington Vet are caring and thorough in the care of Fallon. She is treated with patience especially since she is an older girl. The vet and staff work diligently to provide her with excellent care.
Again, Fort Washington Vet has exceeded my expectations! My dog was ill and Fort Washington vet staff fit her in on a weekend. She was seen by Dr. Berman, who always takes the time to evaluate and explain what is happening and how to help my fur baby. He never ever tries to charge more than necessary and I always feel like we have received the best care possible! I travel 30 minutes to get to this practice as it is the best I have encountered over many years with many pets!
We took our 13 yo dog here for a 2nd opinion on a torn ACL. The vet and nurse were truly outstanding. Our dog wasn't himself and we did not know he had 2 ear infections and also arthritis and some loose teeth. The vet also recommended a monthly shot for his arthritis/ACL. Fast forward 3 weeks and our boy is back to when he was younger. We didn't do surgery and he is running and playing wonderfully. They are very thorough, compassionate, and experts in their field.
Great docs and personnel. Been using this practice since the late 1980s.
