During a dental cleaning, the vet performs a thorough oral exam to identify diseased and painful teeth, and other potential causes for concern.
Digital X-rays are commonly used during our dental procedures to uncover painful conditions that detract from your pet’s oral health. Unfortunately, an oral exam cannot tell the entire story of what is happening in your pet’s mouth whereas X-rays typically uncover bone loss, abscesses below the gum line and decaying teeth.

How We Safely Provide Anesthesia During a Dental Procedure
Tools that are used to aid in pet monitoring and safe anesthesia during a pet dental procedure include:
- An intravenous fluid pump
- A blood pressure monitor
- A carbon dioxide monitor
- An oxygen saturation monitor
- A warm air blanket to maintain normal body temperature
Diagnose & Treat Dental Health Issues
We also take dental x-rays during these procedures to allow us to appropriately recognize, diagnose, and treat problems not initially obvious or visible to the naked eye, and oftentimes we uncover diseased teeth that appear clinically normal. Dental x-rays are rapidly becoming the standard of care due to their diagnostic value—after all, our patients cannot tell us if they have a toothache! We strive to look closely for disease and treat it appropriately.
Our doctors have completed advanced training in oral surgery techniques to help ensure the best outcome for your pet.
We perform pet dental procedures under anesthesia Monday through Friday. Your pet is admitted to the hospital in the morning and discharged in the late afternoon or early evening with recommendations for future preventative care.

What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is the most common dental disease affecting both cats and dogs. In fact, statistics have revealed that up to 80% of cats and dogs exhibit signs of oral disease by age three.
Periodontal disease in animals is most commonly caused by poor dental hygiene. Additionally, it is more common in smaller dog breeds and certain breeds of cats, as there is typically less room in the mouth for teeth, which are then forced tightly together. Periodontal disease is also more common in aging and senior pets.
